Scholarships |
|
This summer
or fall, is your child… going to Jewish overnight camp, visiting
Israel, attending a National Federation for Temple Youth (NFTY)
program or college this summer or fall?
If so, there
are scholarships to help with expenses. Did you know that in the
last seven years, Temple Beth Am has awarded over $22,500 in scholarship
money to our teenagers for college, camp, and Israel trip expenses?
Yes -- $22,500! The scholarships are not need based.
Generous contributions
to the funds listed below, as well as donations from the Rabbi,
the Cantor, Brotherhood, and Sisterhood, have resulted in the Temple
being able to make these awards.

READING
IS A MITZVAH WE DO FOR OURSELVES
This is the theme of this year's Library reading incentive program
for the students of the Religious School. The fun begins when students
check out books and then sign their names on colorful patches shaped
like dreidels, stars of David, rectangles, flowers, hamantaschen,
etc. The patches have been used to create a paper quilt of many colors.
This was accomplished with such speed, that a second mitzvah quilt
is in the works. The completed quilt can be viewed on the bulletin
board, as you enter the Library. |

Brotherhood
Breakfast |
Special Program Event
Sunday
May 18th |
|
|
|
On
Sunday, May 18th at 9:00am,as
part of the the
Temple Brotherhood's ongoing breakfast series at Temple Beth
Am, Brotherhood is pleased to welcome Martin Abramowitz, renowned
expert in Jewish
Major League Baseball Players.
Martin Abramowitz
has been called “America's custodian of Jewish baseball memory.
He is
the founding President of Jewish Major Leaguers, Inc., and has documented
what he calls “American Jews in America's Game.”
|
|
His first project,
in affiliation with Fleer Trading Cards and the American Jewish
Historical Society, was a baseball card set commemorating the 142
Jewish Major Leaguers from 1871 to 2003's All-Star Game. Martin’s
current card set is the 2008 Hank Greenberg 75th Anniversary edition
of Jewish Major Leaguers Baseball Cards, and it will be available
for purchase at the breakfast. The 2008 set will also be celebrating
Ryan Braun, the first-ever Jewish Rookie of the Year.
The Brotherhood
is the recipient of a generous grant from the Metrowest Jewish Community
Fund (supported by Combined Jewish Philanthropies) which will assist
us with this event and allow us to reach out to the greater Framingham
community. Brotherhood will be collaborating with 2 local elder-care
facilities, Heritage & Farm Pond, to make it easy for their residents
to come to the breakfast with complimentary admission and help with
transportation. And we will be asking them to bring their children
and grandchildren to make it an inter-generational event.
Brotherhood
will also collaborate with Framingham Little-Big League and publicize
the breakfast event through their organization. Again, the theme
will be to make it an inter-generational event by bringing children
– parents – grandparents. I hope you can join us too.
This event will
take place at Temple Beth Am, 300 Pleasant Street, Framingham, and
features the Brotherhood’s famous 40’ buffet breakfast. The public
is welcome to attend at a cost of $8. Children 12 & under and Brotherhood
members are free. Reservations are recommended and can be made by
calling John Clayman, Brotherhood President, at 508-561-0974 or
e-mail John.
|
|
Brotherhood
membership is open to all.
Become a member of the Brotherhood for $50 (seniors $35) and come
to all of our breakfasts.

An Evening With A Celebrated Boston Globe Columnist
Wednesday
May 21st |
|
|
|
On
Wednesday, May 21st at 7:30pm,as
part of the the Temple Sisterhood's
ongoing community series at Temple Beth Am, Sisterhood is pleased
to welcome Jeff Jacoby, Jeff Jacoby, celebrated columnist for The
Boston Globe.
Jeff Jacoby
is an award-winning columnist for The Boston Globe. Seeking a conservative
voice to balance its famously liberal roster of commentators, the
Globe in 1994 hired him away from the Boston Herald, where he had
been the chief editorial writer since 1987.
|
|
Within months
of his debut at the Globe, The Boston Phoenix dubbed his twice-weekly
essays "a must-read," describing Mr. Jacoby as "the region's pre-eminent
spokesman for Conservative Nation."
A native of
Cleveland, Mr. Jacoby graduated with honors from George Washington
University in 1979 and from Boston University Law School in 1983.
He briefly practiced law at the nationally renowned firm of Baker
& Hostetler, before returning to Boston to work on a political campaign,
hoping to inject some two-party competition into the one-party political
culture of Massachusetts.
In 1999, Mr.
Jacoby became the first recipient of the Breindel Prize, a $10,000
award for excellence in opinion journalism. In 2004, he received
the Thomas Paine Award of the Institute for Justice, an award presented
to journalists "who dedicate their work to the preservation and
championing of individual liberty."
After Mr. Jacoby's
program with questions and answers, join us for dessert and coffee.
This event will
take place at Temple Beth Am, 300 Pleasant Street, Framingham and
is the final Sisterhood program of the 2007-2008 season. As with
all our programs, this is free and open to the TBA and Metrowest
community. For more information call the Temple Office at 508-872-8300
or e-mail

PROGRAMS
& EVENTS
Designed Just For You
Understanding that our temple has a plethora of family-centered activities,
but not as many events geared toward empty-nesters, we have launched
a program which will be open to anyone, but specifically designed
to be attractive to those whose lives no longer center on driving
their children to and from their activities. Now in its second season,
we are thrilled to be offer this program to our community!
|
|
BASS (Beth
Am Social Series) is a series of social gatherings, both at
the temple and off-site, where adults will have the opportunity
to socialize with each other at a variety of different venues.

"Hunters & Gatherers" Came Out In Full Force! |

They
Hunted & Conquered!
By
Lisa Movitz and Nikki Davidson
Once
again, the race was on for the second annual Temple Beth Am Scavenger
Hunt.
Questions like
how many slush machines are there at Aunt Annie's in the Natick
Collection or name the ten plagues in the order they occurred sent
our thirteen teams in various numbers running for their cars in
the parking lot of Temple Beth Am on Saturday
evening of April 27th.
|
 |
|
They set off
to find and answer a variety of questions (over 70 in all) that
co-chairs Lisa Movitz and Nikki Davidson had thought up. The teams
were given 90 minutes to complete as much as they could. By 8:45
p.m. everyone was required to be back at the home of Cantor Jodi
Schechtman and Gene Laks for a spread of delicious desserts or lose
points for being late!
Lively banter and laughter filled the home as the groups eagerly
exchanged answers about the questions that were asked.
In the end,
second place went to Team #13 of Dena & Mark Stetson and Laurie
& Steve Schneider. Judy & Gavin Finn and David & Pam Helinek of
Team #8 were the big winners! This is now the second time the Finn's
have won. Obviously, they are the pair to team up with next time.
Many thanks
to Ellen Jagher, as always, for handling all the reservations from
the main office, to Nancy Marcus for helping to coordinate the dessert
portion of the evening, to Bill Habelow, Madison Laks, and Lou Movitz
for helping to check and score the scavenger answer sheets, and
a special thank you to Cantor Jodi Schechtman and Gene Laks for
being such gracious hosts in their lovely home.
|
 |
| If
you are interested in participating in any or all of the BASS events,
please contact or email the co-chairs, Nancy
Marcus or Cantor
Schechtman for more information. |

| IMPACT'S
First Event Is A Success! |
|
|
|
On
March 27, 2008,
IMPACT had their first event at the Aegean Restaurant to watch the
Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament, and it was a success! This new
group, being spearheaded by Jamie Kurtzman and Jennifer Siegal-Miller,
for young Jews in their 20s and 30s looking to meet other Jewish
people and get involved in the MetroWest Jewish community, got off
to a great start.
The food was
good, the basketball was great, but the company was ever better!
|
|
About fifteen
people, members and non-members alike, noshed on spinach pies, cheese
pies, hummus and M&Ms, while watching March Madness on the Aegean's
flat screen TVs. We got a chance to spend time with old friends,
meet new ones and chat over a few beers about plans for upcoming
events. Keep your eyes open for details about a summer softball
game and BBQ as well as a wine tasting or cooking evening!
Thanks to everyone
who came to the Aegean, we had a great time! Hope your brackets
survived!
