Cantor’s Message
Tebeam
January 2009

So what is BASS, anyway?  Some people pronounce it bass (with a short “a”, like the fish).  Others pronounce is bass (with a long “a”, like the instrument).  It was intended to have the long “a”, but more importantly, it is an integral part of our temple community.  BASS (with a long “a”), the Beth Am Social Series, is a group intended to provide social opportunities for those whose lives do not center around driving their kids to and from their activities.  BASS came about when we realized that there were many, many events and programs at Temple Beth Am for families with children in religious school, but not many programs that were designed for just adults.  Although the initial push was toward empty-nesters, we soon found out that even those families with children sometimes craved an evening of adult company and adult-centered activities.

In the past, BASS events have included trips to the Hasty Pudding Theater in Cambridge, Scavenger Hunts (in conjunction with our Membership Committee), Hip Hop dance classes, Bingo night, a Chocolate Seder, Bowling Night and many others.  As chair of the BASS Committee, Nancy Marcus and a small group of devoted committee members have been trying to find out what the needs and wants of our community are and fill those wants with inexpensive and fun programming.

This year, BASS is teaming up with our Membership Committee to come up with a year of exciting and inviting events that will bring together our community for social gatherings.  Keeping in mind that our economy is taking its toll on all of us, the programming that is being discussed is not for events that will break the bank for anyone;  it is creating opportunities to enjoy being with our extended temple family at a minimal cost.

The first big event of the year is Bingo Night, which will be held on Saturday evening, January 31st.  For a few dollars, friends and neighbors can come for an evening of camaraderie and fun with cash prizes.  We will have everything you need – Bingo sheets, daubers and snacks for sale, as well as an electronic Bingo board big enough for everyone to see.  Watch for more information on the website and in your mid-month mailing, and join us for an evening of pure fun (and a little healthy competition!).  Don’t let the cold dark days of January get you down.  The temple’s warm and alive, and we’re waiting for you!

Shanah Tovah,

Cantor Jodi Schechtman
